Will Bethesda’s star-explorer RPG have what it takes to stick the landing?

Bethesda has given Starfield, a space exploration RPG, an official release date on September 6, 2023. The game was originally delayed from a 2022 release, and Bethesda has been lock-lipped about many of the game’s details. In fact, the only gameplay we’ve seen of the game (originally announced in 2018) was in a polished-over 15-minute gameplay trailer.

For a reminder of Starfield’s weight for Bethesda, it is going to be the first new Bethesda universe in 25 years, making this game’s release execution critical. The game has also been in active development for around eight years at this point (if not longer), which only heightens the curiosity and frustration around longtime fans.

The game was originally anticipated to be out in Q1-Q2 2023, but the delayed fall launch date will give Bethesda the chance to showcase more Starfield materials at an exclusive Starfield Direct Bethesda-Microsoft press event on June 11, 2023.

You can watch the announcement trailer here.

Do you think Bethesda has a new success story here, or will it bust? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

I'm very excited about this game and hope it can deliver.

I desperately want this to be amazing, but...I'm really worried it's going to be another Dangerous Elite or No Man's Sky, where there's real potential for something tremendously cool but it's seemingly always out of reach because the vastness of space and the endless parade of planets can't possibly be filled with enough engaging content to not make the moment to moment gameplay feel boring or tedious.  Don't get me wrong, there are things I love about Dangerous Elite and No Man's Sky, both of those games have their moments, but...I want a game that delivers on everything that something like Star Citizen promises.  I want a space game that frequently delivers amazing cinematic moments, whether that's epic space battles or a white knuckle race against the clock or just turning to watch the horizon on a alien planet and see clouds of burning gas spewing pink lightning as the storm rolls toward me.  I want a game that makes me feel the way I do whenever I hear "Adagio in D Minor" by John Murphy.

All I have to say WOW. Wish I had a system that could take full advantage of it.
