Sadly it was advised when I was in Europe in 1991 not to visit any former warsaw pact nations as the border guards will sometimes take things from you (wasn't just your country), the laws and protection for Americans were iffy as well and we didn't have that much in Embassy resources.  Yes I would have like to visit countries like Hungary, Romania, East Germany (or just Germany - I did visit parts of Southern Germany, the now Czech and Slovakia.  Sure in the past those nations were not exactly our friends, but the amount of history and culture, it all is of interest to me when I travel.  The history alone is what I enjoy, since it is a documented history that can be read and viewed.  I find the European and Asian ancient history as the best when in comparison to North and South American History, as the cultures/tribes/civilizations didn't write down and instead had an oral history or their limited writings are still being translated, especially since some sites were just abandoned and no one has found any writings to say why.

I am from the US and a former United States Marine!
