Fallout 76 has a 51GB day one patch

Those getting the PS4, and Xbox One versions of Fallout 76 on disc may not be able to immediately jump in thanks to a massive day one patch.

In a similar situation to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s, players opting for the retail version of Fallout 76 will too have to download a hefty day one patch to be able to play.

Fallout 76 launches this week, and some retail discs are already in the wild. PSU reports that the initial disc install comes in at around 45GB.

The day one patch is somehow even bigger, at a little over 51GB. Fallout 76 is an online game, of course, so there’s no way around this requirement. The downloaded files are likely replacing outdated disc data.

Bethesda recently revealed some of the fixes included in the patch, based on beta feedback. Things like improvements to the social menu, the effect of hunger, and the overly loud gunshot sounds were all items on the developer’s list.

It’s been a rough ride for Fallout 76 so far. The recent beta tests exposed players to legacy bugs like uncapped frame-rate screwing up game physics which returned alongside new ones such as an early issue that caused the beta client to be deleted upon patching.

More recently, Fallout 76 players on PC discovered that they’re unable to uninstall the beta unless they buy the game.

Fallout 76 is out November 14 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
