Steamgifts FAQ / Guide to Steamgifts

Quick Guide (TL:DR)

  • Steamgifts is convenient platform to manage giveaways.
  • 100$ steam account value is required to register; Bundle games, mass-giveaway and promotional giveaway games does not count.
  • Higher chance of winning, as there will likely be less entries than regular giveaways
  • Invite-only and AlienWare Arena-exclusive giveaways eligible to be posted here
  • Giveaways with less than 5 entries will not generate any CV for you.
  • Steamgifts is not required to make giveaways here, but it is a platform a majority of the giveaway creators use.
  • Once the giveaway ends a winner is automatically and randomly selected. The giveaway creator has 7 days to send the key, if you do not instantly receive the key, please be patient. When the key has been sent you can find it on your won page, accessible by clicking on the trophy icon. Once redeemed, remember to mark it as received and sync your steamgifts profile. If the key is duplicate, not for the game or not for the right version of the game in the giveaway, do NOT mark it as received, instead comment on the giveaway that it is duplicate, wrong game or wrong version.
  • Keys won on Steamgifts have to be activated on the steam account associated with your steam account. Failure to do so may result in a suspension or ban.

For more in-depth explanations, please read the full guide below.

About Steamgifts

What is Steamgifts?

Steamgifts, or more accurately steamgifts.com and commonly called SG for short, is a website for steam gifts as the name implies. This includes steam gifts and steam keys. Users give away their spare steam gifts and steam keys to randomly selected members of the website. Steamgifts is not in any way related to Valve, but purely uses steam for verification purposes to check which games you own and to check if you activate the games you win.

How does it relate to AlienWareArena?

A majority of the giveaways you find here in the Community Giveaways takes place on steamgifts.

Why should you join steamgifts?

Other than the AlienWareArena exclusive giveaways found here in the AlienWareArena Community Giveways, steamgifts have hundreds of daily non-AlienWareArena-exclusive giveaways. It is basically more chances of winning more games.

Does it cost anything?

No, it is absolutely free once you meet the requirements of joining.

Joining Steamgifts

What are the requirements for joining?

Your steam account has to be valued at 100$ according to steamgifts algorithms.

Free games, as in games from massive giveaways - giveaways with more than 1000 Copies - on various different websites does NOT get counted towards the required 100$.

Games that have been exploited, such as game packages that have given free copies of a game or had pricing errors will also NOT get counted towards the required 100$.

Bundled games, as in games from bundles on various different websites, will be counted for up to 15% of the steam store retail price, but will in most cases not get counted towards the required 100$.

A game might be considered bundled even if it was not included in any bundle IF the discount on the game has ever been more than 95% off the steam store US retail price regardless of region. This means if the game has had an massive discount in another region such as Russia and CIS region, which is already at a heavily discounted rate compared to the US store price, it might be considered bundled. The same goes if the game has had a massive discount on an official store front, such as GreenManGaming, IndieGala, HumbleBundle, the game might also be considered bundled.

Here is a link to the Official Steamgifts Bundled Game-list.

Another good resource to check if a game has been bundled is https://isthereanydeal.com/. Simply search to check if the game, you consider buying in order to increase your account value, has been bundled.

The best way to increase your account value would be to focus on games that will most likely will not be bundled, like games from big publishers/developers. Even if you bought a game that was not in a bundle at the time, it might be in the future when try to sign up again.

To check if you meet the requirements for joining steamgifts, you can go to the official website registration page.

The registration page mentions: Games that have been accessible through bundles, or games that were once available for free due to promotions or pricing errors are not included in this calculation. We have this requirement in place to prevent users from registering multiple accounts.

So even if you own 700 games, the website might state: Account could not be verified with 0 games, valued at $0.00. Required value, $100.00. Please wait another 10 minutes before trying again.

It could also state any X, X being a number between 0 and your total game count, amount of games and Y, Y being any number between 0.00 and 99.99, amount of value.

This is because the steamgifts algorithms have considered all or a majority of the games you own for free, exploited or bundled. This is not a bug in the website.

If you do not meet the requirements, you can acquire one ore more games to increase your account value and try again after the stated amount of minutes has passed.

Once your account meet the 100$ requirement, the registration page will take you to the Steamgifts Account Creation page, where you will fill in your desired Steamgifts Username, desired password, email and country.

The email you supply should be a valid email that you check regularly, as you will get notifications when you win (can be toggled off) or a giveaway creator may decide to email you the key.

The region you specify is also important as it determined which region restricted giveaways you can join and which you can not. It is important to give the correct region, as the giveaway might be for a steamgift and with steams recent gifting policy change, you might not be able to receive the game you won if you have selected the wrong region.

It should also be mentioned that you can not manually change your region once your account has been created, so make sure to select the right one.

Why is the 100$ account value required to register?

The 100$ account value requirement was put in place to make it harder to make more than one account. If users could easily have more than one account, they would be able to enter multiple times in giveaways, giving them an unfair advantage over people who only have one account. Using multiple accounts is a violation of the rules and will result in a permanent ban from steamgifts if discovered.

After Joining Steamgifts

What should you do now?

The first thing you should do is read the SteamGifts Guidelines and then the Steamgifts FAQ to make sure you understand the rules of the website and how the system works.

Then you should join the official AlienWareArena steam group, if you are not already a member of it, of course.

What are points?

Steamgifts uses a point system. A user can have a maximum of 400 Points, though a user may have more than 400 points on certain special circumstances.

All users receive 6 points every 15 minutes. this results in a full refill from 0 to 400 points in roughly 17 hours. At 400 points, you will no longer generate points every 15 until you have spent points. Between 395 and 399, the 6 points every 15 minutes is still in effect, but will only give you up to the maximum 400 points. To gain maximum use of your points, you should check in once a day and spend your points.

What can points be used for?

Points are used to enter giveaways. The entry price for a giveaway is based on the US steam store retail price of the game and is 1 point per dollar rounded up. A game costing 1,49$ will require 2 points to enter, likewise a game costing 49,99$ will require 50 points to enter.

Even the price of a game is more than 100$, the maximum entry point cost for a giveaway is 100 points.

Any user can only enter a giveaway once. This means if you and 99 other users enter a giveaway, you have a 1% chance of winning (1:100). If you and 199 other users enter a giveaway you will have 0.5% of winning (1:200). Likewise if you and 4 other enter a giveaway, you will have 20% of winning (1:5).

The amount of maximum entries can not initially be reduced, so your chance of winning any particular giveaway remains dynamic until the giveaway ends and a random entrant per copy of the game being given away is selected by the system. This means that in a giveaway with 5 entrants and 5 copies you have a 100% chance of winning.

What are the types of giveaways?

Steamgifts has three types of giveaways.

Public, which is accessible to every user of the website; group, which is accessible to every user of the website that is ALSO a member of the required steam groups; and lastly invite-only giveaways, which is accessible to everyone who has the link.

This means that a group only giveaway could be used to restrict amount of entries by restricting amount of members in the group. There are certain groups on steam that are made for this specific purpose, having few members means that every member has a higher chance winning one of those group exclusive giveaways.

Likewise the amount of entrants in invite-only giveaways can be limited by simply only sharing the link with people that are desired to enter the giveaway, or it could be shared on the forums.

What is CV and levels?

CV stands for Contributor Value. This value is determined by the US steam store retail prices and the state of the games that you have given away, that has been received and marked as such. By state, I mean wether the game has been given away for free and thusly will give 0$ value, if it has been bundled and will give 15% of the US store retail price or if it is unbundled and will give 100% of the US steam store retail value.

The determination of a games state is the same as those outlined in the "What are the requirements for joining?" section earlier in this guide.

The levels are used to further limit who can enter a giveaway.

A list of all the Levels, the required CV to reach them, amount of users in those levels can be found here.

This basically means that the more games or more expensive games you giveaway, the more CV you will receive and thus the higher level you get. This is much similar to our ARP Points and ARP Levels, except of course that our ARP Points are tied to community involvement rather than the value of giveaways.

What about the AlienWareArena-exclusive giveaways?

Those will either be group-giveaways and require you to be a member of the official AlienWareArena steam group or be invite-only giveaways.

The main difference for you is that invite-only giveaways will only be accessible by people browsing our Community Giveaways forums, while the group-giveaways will be available to all members of the steam group regardless wether they see the giveaway in the Community Giveaway forum.

This essentially means you will have a higher chance of winning the invite-only giveaways found here in the Community Giveaways forums.

Regardless of what type of giveaway it is, as long as you have the required points and do not already own the game you can participate in the giveaways.

What about the non-AlienWareArena-exclusive giveaways?

You can of course join any of the public giveaways and on the steamgifts forums you can find plenty of people that share their invite-only giveaways. You might be able to find "trains", which is linked invite-only giveaway, with between 2 and upwards to several hundred giveaways linked.

In the steamgifts forums can also find groups with specific rules for joining, that may increase your chance of winning games.

Talking on the steamgifts forums might also get you white-listed. Being white-listed means you will be included in special "group" giveaways only accessible to users on the giveaway creator's white-list, which depending on the size of the white-list could give you high chances of winning.

How do you create a giveaway?

First you read the AlienWare Arena Community Giveaway Forum Posting Rules and make sure you understand what it entails. Then you head to https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaways/new or navigate to the page by clicking the "Giveaways" button on the top left and then click "Create a New Giveaway" in the sub-menu.

Here you select the game you are giving away. You then select type, as in whether it is a steam key or steam gift. If it is a key, you put the steam key, or keys if you want to give away multiple copies of the game, in the key field.

In the start date field you set the giveaway start time: it can start from the giveaway creation time or at a specific date and time and the same goes for the end date. Remember to adhere to the Community Giveaway Posting Rules.

If the game being given away is region striction, mark the region restriction section as yes and mark the countries that CAN enter the giveaway or select the predefined regions that CAN enter.

In the "Who can enter" section, remember to make it invite-only or "whitelist / group". If you decide to make it a group giveaway, make sure it is exclusively AlienWareArena ONLY.

You can set contributor level, so that only users at that level or higher can join the giveaway, regardless of what type of giveaway it is.

In the description you can include any message you want to give to those that see the giveaway. It could be extra information, a link back to your thread, a link to your other giveaways, a joke and anything else you would like. Remember to follow the rules outlined in the Community Giveaways Posting Rules.

Click "review giveaway" and make sure everything is as you want it to be, otherwise you can click the "Edit", otherwise press "Confirm Giveaway", which will take you to the newly formed giveaway page for your giveaway.

Copy the link from your browsers address / URL field, you will need this to share the giveaway.

You may want to read Starmada's Guide to Dynamic Signature Guide, but this entirely optional.

Now you are ready to post the giveaway on the Community Giveaways page. Remember to adhere to the Community Giveaway Posting Rules.

If you have any further questions, feel welcome to ask anything related to steamgifts.

Have fun making giveaways.

Thank you and you are most welcome :)

I genuinely hope it will answer a lot of the questions people might have and remove some of the frustration that might have been tied to issues relating to steamgifts.

Hopefully this will lead to more people joining steamgifts and then being able to participate in giveaways and creating giveaways. The more the merrier!

TL:DR version:

      - Steamgifts is a more convenient platform to distribute giveaways in here, it will automatically register entries from a simple "enter giveaway" button, and it will randomly select a winner out of the participants without having users to post in a thread as participation entries.

      - You need a $100 steam account value to register for creating and entering giveaways. Games that are bundled or games won for free on mass giveaways or promotional giveaways will not be counted towards your account value to prevent people creating multiple accounts to enter giveaways.

      - Giveaways made only for people on this forum via alienware group only or invitation are eligible to be posted. The giveaways in here also gives you a better chance of winning them, as there are fewer entries than your usual public giveaway.

      - If you do private giveaways with only one or two people to invite, then you won't get points to level up, not to mention its against their rules. Only if you get 5 or more entries you will be able to get points normally.

      - You are not obligated to use steamgifts for giveaways in here, it is just the standard platform that mostly everyone in here uses for giveaways. You can just normally make a thread and select a random winner from all the people that posted in the thread and PM them your steam key.

      - If you won a giveaway and redeemed the steam key on your account and you immediately see steamgifts giveaways of the game you won, please do not join them and use the "Sync" button to sync your steam account in order for steamgifts to update your game library to date:

You are not allowed to use the steamgifts keys you won on a giveaway if you already own the game. They are only redeemable for the account you used to enter it and should not be used for alt accounts. Giveaways will not show for games you already own, but if your steam account is not updated after you won a game outside of steamgifts, then steamgifts will still register your account as not owning the game you won elsewhere, thus using the "Sync account" features will fix that.

Otherwise i also appreciate your effort to make such a detailed guide of using steamgifts, not many take the time to make guides like these.

Any guide can always always be improved, so I appreciate the feedback.

You are wrong about less than 5 entries being against the rules. You are correct that it will not provide any CV, but if your giveaway have less than 5 entries a winner is still selected and you are still required to give the key or the gift. I will add a paragraph to clarify this. And I will add a paragraph about won keys.

But I do tell the users to read the FAQ and the Guidelines once they join, which will tell them that the key has to be activated on their account, but adding a paragraph here also do not hurt, so I will add one.

Good idea with a TLDR; section, I will add one. And I will add a section on what to do after people win as well. And what the general expectation to win outside of the AWA-exclusive giveaways should be.

I wrote this guide because I have seen plenty of posts over the last couple of months asking about steamgifts and I want to remove peoples frustrations if possible. Having a guide like this, where everything is located in one place, will make help reduce the frustrations and answer the questions people have or are too afraid to ask.

Yeah a lot of people in here don't really bother reading long texts, regardless if there are guides or someone's opinion, hence its always best to have a shorter version of it.

That is actually correct, logically just giving it normally to a friend or making a steamgifts into giving it to a single friend makes no difference really, so i have no idea why i thought it was against the rules. I think i associated to a a rule where you would get a suspension for CV abusing, but it was unrelated to what i wrote above.

The reason why most people request a giveaway with less than 5 entries to be deleted is so they can reuse the key for another giveaway that will hopefully get 5 or more entries, but it is not against the rules. You are partially correct though, the rule you are thinking of is from SG v1, the first iteration of SG, where creating a giveaway with less than 5 entries was against the rules to prevent CV farming, it was removed when the system changed with the current SG v2. You are also correct that it makes no sense to use SG if you intend to just give your game to a single friend, but it could technically be used as a system to prevent your friends from bitching about who gets a game: You tell them to join your giveaway and whom ever SG picks gets the game with no questions or complaints. It would not give you any CV, but it perfectly legit, it even goes well with the spirit of steamgifts, that gifting should be done not because of benefits but because gifting games is a great thing.

In some of my larger events on SG, with a few hundred giveaways at a time, some of my GAs have had less than 5 entries, but I still sent the key and I was still happy about it. It's about giving and sharing games.

Sharing is caring and I wish I could do giving for a living, but at least I can be helpful and generous in the meanwhile :)

This is such a comprehensive guide!

With the addition of the "Quickguide" (good idea, Sulimen) for those who balk at anything longer than a paragraph or two, it's such an excellent reference that I would link to it, were it not behind the AWA Level 5 wall.

Thank you for your effort in bringing together all this information and laying it out so well.

Good job, Semeicardia.

Good job, Semeicardia.

Thank you, I'll be adding a few more paragraphs to go even more in-depth in some sections later today.

And yes, it is behind the level 5 wall, but it does make sense that it is in the Community Giveaway section, as you will not generally see steamgifts links outside of the Community Giveaway section and if someone has issues with steamgifts that is below level 5, you can just quote my guide.
