Tips and Guidelines for Creating the Best Map and Screenshot

  • Adhere to gamesmanship standards set by existing Defense Grid maps.No unfair placement of core housings, entrances, exits, et cetera. You can push the limits, but don’t try to beat up on the player, try to entertain them and give them challenges that are interesting to play!
  • Make it attractive.Finished looking maps will be more likely to catch our attention than a level sketch.
  • Unique and interesting applications of the in-game mapping tools will help a map stand out.
  • Make sure your build areas are clearly visible from all angles especially when you build spirals and bridges.
  • A good mix of buildable areas and non-buildable areas in a map can affect how fun the player’s experience is.If you give players more room than they will ever need to build, they may not find it challenging enough.
  • Play your work!Play testing your own work and getting feedback from friends is the best way to improve your map making skills.Maps go through much iteration before they are released to players.
  • When you are making your play space, be sure to think about how certain aliens can take advantage of its layout than others. For example, the Rhino alien can run very fast in straight lines, but has to slow down to turn.

Please be sure to read the official rules for important details regarding the entry process, judging, voting and other elements of the contest.
