Updated....Alpha case turned into a.... cooler/dock/amp

  • 84

A friend give me a Alpha case. There have been many display models on ebay and i had some ideas. I like the idea of the Graphics Amp but i think it could be more. I am not done yet because there has been a delay with my HDDs

1.First thing i did was add fans so it could be a cooler.

2. Add 4 USB 3.0 ports. This means i can use it with Anything.

3.Add a USB GPU. Can't game but can browse and watch youtube/netflix ( still need to mount in photo)

4. Add 2-4 TB of HDDs. This will let me put in a small boot SSD and have lots of storage for steam tucked away from children.

5 Add temperature sensor. In Hivemind you have no ideas of temps. Alpha has no issues cooling but i am a stats guy.

It is powered off of one USB plug and one 4 pin Like i said above it can be used with anything. I thought it would cool OK but to my shock it cools amazing 15 c drop across the board. This beats my high powered coolers. My thought is maybe because it is a exact fit and they almost connect it has a vortex affect going on.

Side note, i thought the Alpha was all plastic. But in true Alien form it is a metal shell with a nice soft plastic on the outside to fool us.

Edit. Finished product didn't end up using the GPU. I am very happy, Lets the Alpha run cooler, And shows me the temps right up front. Also has A 2TB HDD and lets me run a 120GB SSD boot drive. No more waiting on the Alpha to boot.

Half way done pics. Below

Hah, this is a nice project. I don't think it would be that easy to make it a GA, but what you've done with it is very nice.

Right. to get true GPU performance i would need more then USB 3.0, I am going to look into pulling the Wifi card to get a GPU option there. Other than that i was able to improve everything else. The final product will be cleaned and tighten up.

How many of those did you make?

I will when it's done waiting on parts and sand it all down so hopefully it's pretty. I may be PMing you when it comes to using the WiFi port for a true GPU.

You had multiple. Last year you posted a thread showing 2 coolers. I may just be thinking of something else.

Oh yes. Coolers in general I have made many. I thought you was talking about just out of Alpha's

it looks really nice... and the case with the fans look really good with the LED lights.. was it hard to mod the case with the metal panels behind the plastic?
