Is it worth it to pick up Destiny 2 The Witch Queen?

I've never really played Destiny. I played for a handful of hours when Destiny 2 went to it's "free" mode a few years ago. I enjoyed what I did play, but I got overwhelmed by so many choices on what to do, and eventually I got distracted by other things.

I did enjoy the time I put into things like Borderlands and Wareframe, so I think I might like this as well.

So, is it worth picking up when it's available in the Marketplace? Will I be so far behind other players, or does that even matter? Is there other content that I will need purchase outsdie The Witch Queen, or can I jump right in from there?

I'm interested to hear from folks more familiar with the game. Thanks.

I did ask myself the same question and found this review on Steam:

Content is cycled out of the game making the base campaign & over time each expansion unplayable, rendering the game as hostile to new players as the game lacks any real introduction to the world as a result. You won't know the world, setting, characters, lore, or anything without a wiki or youtube video essay on hand.

You don't get much to play with in the free version, and expansions basically have a time limit before they are "vaulted" and their campaigns get removed from the game. It might be a year or two but it feels like a slap in the face to buy a game just to have it taken from you down the line as they push you to buy the new shiny content instead which will also be removed in a couple years time.

overall:
+ Fun gunplay and abilities
- Removed story confuses new players
- Poor UI that doesn't explain icons
- Reliance on outside knowledge (wiki, youtube, etc) for detailed information
- Content you purchase will eventually be inaccessible

I'd say it's a great point of entry, but be warned that Destiny 2 isn't exactly great at onboarding new/returning players. That said, you won't really be that far behind other players, because with the launch of Witch Queen, the power floor was raised for everyone, and the power grind hasn't been that bad for a while now, so it's relatively easy to get to a good enough power level by just doing the Legendary campaign, and then focusing on leveling.

The game has improved a lot when it comes to lore and storytelling, but as others have said, older content has been cycled out, so the story isn't super easy to understand without watching a video, but on the bright side, once you've caught up to the point we are at now, you won't have such a hard time.
