Alienware 15 problem

  • 56

Hey everyone!

This is my first post, so apologies if it is in the wrong place.

My Alienware 15 (R1) had a problem that is, apparently, a bit common. A component from the motherboard has died and it only sometimes boots. Lights and fans turn on, but it doesn't boot. No beeps or anything.

I am thinking of replacing the board. So the question is if I can put in a motherboard from the next version of the laptop, where everything is the exact same, except for the graphics card. In parts-people.com that one would be the 0C5MH motherboard, as opposed to the HH4PY that is the one my computer has.

I called Dell and they told me it'd be okay to do the replacement. I don't know if I trust them 100% (since they are basically call center agents).

Any input would be appreciated! (Either about the replacement, or someone else that had the same problem, or any other suggestions on what to do)

Thanks in advance!

Are you still in warranty? if you are, it should be covered with the on-site replacement. If not, you are safe to do the replacement, but the only concern I have with your model is if the cpu is soldered to the board.

I second this reply. If you have warranty let the pros do it so that in the rare event something goes bad during the swap you can get a new laptop.
