Battlefield 5 brings back War Stories single-player structure, multiplayer features “unexpected” theatres of war

Now that Battlefield 5 has been confirmed to be a real thing, DICE has kicked off a long hype campaign and is already teasing a few things.

Battlefield 5’s official reveal, which takes place next week, was announced overnight.

Alongside that, DICE penned a blog post that dropped a couple of hints about what’s to come. To start with, and as earlier reports have suggested, Battlefield 5’s story campaign will follow in the footsteps of Battlefield 1’s.

In that, the War Stories structure is returning. In Battlefield 1, the campaign followed several protagonist at different stages and in different theatres of the war, and each of them got a couple of short, self-contained missions.

Though the blog post didn’t mention which theatres of the war will be represented (DICE still hasn’t confirmed the WW2 reports), it did tease that we’ll be sent to “unexpected” theatres of war.

If it does end up being set in WW2, it’d be cool to see the Pacific and Eastern Front theatres represented, rather than the same Western Front business almost every other WW2 game featured.

Operations, one of the best modes in Battlefield 1, is being teased, and DICE is hoping people will tune to find out if it returns. The blog post also talks about a bigger scale, a multiplayer mode that “spans multiple maps and modes.”

There’s also talk of “exciting gameplay changes”, but we’re not sure what that really means. We do hope it’s more than just PR speak.

Battlefield 5 does not yet have a release date. The reveal event takes place Wednesday, May 23 at 1pm, 4pm ET, 9pm BST.
