Overclocked i3 vs. Locked i5

DON'T BUY THIS: http://amzn.to/2kQYuSI BUY ONE OF THESE INSTEAD: http://amzn.to/2kvkoas The Intel Core i3 7350K is a cool idea on paper - but that's just it... It'll cost a ton of paper to buy. Almost as much as a locked Core i5. This begs the question: Can an overclockable i3 compete with a locked i5? Interesting, but not that surprising. When it comes to overclocking to try and get better results at cheaper rates, you really have to search for the sweetspots. Those chips that overclock great, and are cheap enough even after adding cooling to outperform, or equal far more expensive chips reliable don't come around all that often, and sometimes they are so specific you have to search for chips from a specific factory and lot. If you luck out and score such a chip, enjoy it, you just won at least 50 geek points for that. :)
On the other hand, as this video review points out, just grabbing something expecting to make a killing, and you'll often be disappointed. So always do your research before plunging into it, unless you just want to overclock something and don't care how much you end up spending. In which case, it's not about getting better value for your money, but the challenge, which is worth at least double geek points for purity of purpose. :D

Intel is just out there trying to make people think the I-3 can be better than an I-5
