Hey my name is James, but go ahead and call me Halo. I'm a mechanical engineering student that has quite the interest in computers. (engineering is a more stable field lol)
Personally, I have never been able to afford a brand new Alienware. In my spare time I like to search for computers that need a bit of love on craigslist. These include laptops that are slow or non functioning. Though unless it is for family use, I restrict my purchases to Alienware computers for the sheer beauty in the machines. I currently have three models in my arsenal along with a Asus.
Alienware Area-51 (2010) The badass one with the fins, Black. Purchased half way across the state for $600, nothing wrong with it. Installed 12GB of high speed ram, a 840 samsung EVO SSD, Dual WD enterprise 1tb HDD's running in Raid 0, a media card reader (custom 3-d printed bracket), and two 5.5" drive bay drawers for storing peripherals in.
Alienware M11x R1 - Bought from a guy on craigslist, $200. Installed Samsung 840 Evo SSD and added new rubber feet.
Alienware M17x R3 3D - Bought from a university student. $250. Replaced Motherboard, ubstalled Intel 90Gb SSD for boot and a WD blue 1tb HDD for storage. Still working out some bugs.
Asus G74 - My gaming laptop that I purchased myself (full retail) $1800. Cheaper than a alienware with the same specs with a cool design and efficient cooling system. Only upgrades are: added a extra 4gb of ram (total of 16Gb) and replaced the boot HDD with a Kingston HyperX SSD. Upgraded to windows 8.
